Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test Syllabus
The Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test (UPTET) is conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Board (UPBEB) to determine the eligibility of candidates for teaching positions in primary (Classes 1-5) and upper primary (Classes 6-8) schools in Uttar Pradesh. The UPTET consists of two papers:
- Paper I: For candidates who wish to teach Classes 1-5 (Primary Level)
- Paper II: For candidates who wish to teach Classes 6-8 (Upper Primary Level)
Candidates can choose to appear for either one or both papers, depending on their teaching aspirations.
UPTET Paper I Syllabus (For Classes 1-5)
The UPTET Paper I consists of five sections, each carrying 30 questions for a total of 150 marks. Each section is designed to assess the candidate’s understanding and teaching aptitude for primary school subjects.
Child Development and Pedagogy
Child Development (Primary School Child):
- Concept of development and its relationship with learning, Principles of child development, Influence of heredity and environment.
Learning and Pedagogy:
- How children think and learn; how and why children fail to achieve success in school performance; Basic processes of teaching and learning; learning as a social activity; social context of learning.
Concept of Inclusive Education and Understanding Children with Special Needs:
- Addressing learners from diverse backgrounds including disadvantaged and deprived; Addressing the needs of children with learning difficulties and impairment.
Language I (Hindi)
Language Comprehension:
- Reading unseen passages – two passages (Prose or Drama) with questions on comprehension, grammar, and verbal ability.
Pedagogy of Language Development:
- Principles of Language Teaching; Role of listening and speaking; Function of language and how children use it as a tool; Challenges of teaching language in a diverse classroom.
Language II (English or Urdu or Sanskrit)
Comprehension:
- Two unseen prose passages (discursive or literary or narrative or scientific) with questions on comprehension, grammar, and verbal ability.
Pedagogy of Language Development:
- Learning and acquisition; Principles of language teaching; Role of listening and speaking; Role of grammar in learning a language; Challenges in teaching in a diverse classroom.
Mathematics
Content:
- Number System; Shapes & Geometry; Measurements & Units; Data Handling; Patterns; Arithmetic.
Pedagogical Issues:
- Nature of Mathematics/Logical thinking; understanding children’s thinking and reasoning patterns and strategies of making meaning and learning; Error analysis and related aspects of learning and teaching; Diagnostic and Remedial Teaching.
Environmental Studies (EVS)
Content:
- Family and Friends; Food; Shelter; Water; Travel; Things We Make and Do.
Pedagogical Issues:
- Concept and scope of EVS; Significance of EVS; Integrated EVS; Environmental Studies & Environmental Education; Learning principles; Scope & relation to Science & Social Science.
UPTET Paper II Syllabus (For Classes 6-8)
The UPTET Paper II consists of four sections, and candidates have to choose between Mathematics/Science and Social Studies sections. Each section carries 30 questions (except for Mathematics/Science and Social Studies sections, which have 60 questions) for a total of 150 marks.

Child Development (Elementary School Child):
- Concept of development and its relationship with learning; Principles of child development; Socialization processes; Influence of heredity and environment.
Learning and Pedagogy:
- How children think and learn; how and why children fail to achieve success in school performance; Basic processes of teaching and learning; Child-centered and progressive education; Critical perspective of the construct of intelligence.
Concept of Inclusive Education and Understanding Children with Special Needs:
- Addressing learners from diverse backgrounds; Addressing the needs of children with learning difficulties and impairment.
