SSC CGL Assistant Section Officer Syllabus

The SSC CGL (Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level) exam is a competitive exam conducted for various posts in government departments and ministries. The Assistant Section Officer (ASO) is one of the prestigious posts offered through this exam. Below is a comprehensive syllabus for the SSC CGL exam, which applies to the ASO post as well.

Tier-I: Preliminary Examination

The Tier-I exam consists of four sections:

General Intelligence & Reasoning

  • Verbal Reasoning: Analogies, Similarities and Differences, Spatial Visualization, Spatial Orientation, Problem-Solving, Analysis, Judgment, Decision Making, Visual Memory, Discrimination, Observation, Relationship Concepts, Arithmetical Reasoning, Verbal and Figure Classification, Arithmetical Number Series, Non-Verbal Series, Coding and Decoding, Statement-Conclusion, Syllogistic Reasoning.
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning: Pattern recognition, Sequence of figures, Classification, Series, Word formation.

General Awareness

  • Static General Knowledge: History, Geography, Polity, Economics, Awards and Honors, Books and Authors, Art & Culture.
  • Science: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science.
  • Current Affairs: National and International Events, Government Schemes, Sports, Important Days, News (Science & Technology, Persons in News).

Quantitative Aptitude

  • Arithmetic: Number Systems, Computation of Whole Numbers, Decimals, Fractions, Relationship between Numbers, Percentage, Ratio and Proportion, Square Roots, Averages, Interest (Simple and Compound), Profit and Loss, Discount, Partnership Business, Mixture and Alligation, Time and Distance, Time and Work.
  • Algebra: Basic algebraic identities, Polynomial.
  • Geometry: Familiarity with elementary geometric figures and facts: Triangle and its various kinds of centers, Congruence and similarity of triangles, Circle and its chords, tangents, angles subtended by chords of a circle, common tangents to two or more circles.
  • Mensuration: Triangle, Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons, Circle, Right Prism, Right Circular Cone, Right Circular Cylinder, Sphere, Hemispheres, Rectangular Parallelepiped, Regular Right Pyramid with triangular or square base.
  • Trigonometry: Trigonometric ratios, Degree and Radian Measures, Standard Identities, Complementary Angles, Heights and Distances.
  • Statistical Charts: Use of Tables and Graphs: Histogram, Frequency Polygon, Bar-diagram, Pie-chart.

English Comprehension

  • Vocabulary: Synonyms, Antonyms, Homonyms, Word Substitution, Spelling/Detecting Mis-spelt words, Idioms & Phrases, One-word substitution.
  • Grammar: Spotting Errors, Phrase Replacement, Fill in the Blanks, Sentence Correction.
  • Comprehension: Reading Comprehension Passage, Cloze Test.

Tier-II: Main Examination

The Tier-II exam is descriptive and consists of four papers:

Paper-I: Quantitative Abilities

  • Topics are similar to Quantitative Aptitude in Tier-I but with a higher level of difficulty.

Paper-II: English Language & Comprehension

  • Vocabulary and Grammar: Similar to Tier-I but more in-depth.
  • Comprehension: Includes Passages, Cloze Test, Active-Passive Voice, Direct-Indirect Speech.

Paper-III: Statistics (for certain posts only)

  • Statistics: Collection and Representation of Data, Measures of Central Tendency, Measures of Dispersion, Moments, Skewness, and Kurtosis, Correlation and Regression, Probability Theory, Random Variable, Probability Distributions, Sampling Theory, Time Series Analysis, Index Numbers.

Paper-IV: General Studies (Finance and Economics)

    • Finance & Accounting: Fundamental Principles, Basic Concepts of Accounting, Basic Concepts of Financial Accounting, Financial Accounting Standards, Double Entry System of Book-keeping, Trading and Profit & Loss Account, Balance Sheet, etc.
    • Economics and Governance: Comptroller & Auditor General of India – Constitutional provisions, Role, and Responsibility, Finance Commission – Role and Functions, Basic Concept of Economics and Introduction to Microeconomics, Theory of Demand and Supply, Theory of Production and Cost, Forms of Market and Price Determination in Different Markets, Indian Economy – Introduction, Economic Development, Indian Economic Reforms, Monetary and Fiscal Policy.

Tier-III: Descriptive Paper

  • Essay Writing, Letter Writing, Precis Writing, Application Writing: Topics related to national interest, social issues, culture, and governance.

Tier-IV: Data Entry Skill Test (DEST)/Computer Proficiency Test (CPT)

  • Skill Test: Proficiency in Data Entry, Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Generation of Slides.
