The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) Group I exam is one of the most prestigious competitive exams conducted in the state. It aims to recruit candidates for high-level administrative posts such as Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Assistant Commissioner, and other similar roles.

TNPSC Group I Exam Structure:

The TNPSC Group I exam consists of three stages:

  1. Preliminary Exam (Objective Type)
  2. Main Written Exam (Descriptive Type)
  3. Interview

1. Preliminary Exam:

The Preliminary Exam is a screening test with multiple-choice questions. It primarily tests general knowledge and aptitude.

  • Total Marks: 300
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Number of Questions: 200
  • Topics Covered:

General Studies (175 questions)

  • General Science: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, and more.
  • Current Events: National, International, Political Science, Geography, Economics, History, Science & Technology.
  • Geography of India: Physical, Social, and Economic Geography of India and Tamil Nadu.
  • History and Culture of India: Ancient, Medieval, Modern history, and Tamil Nadu culture.
  • Indian Polity: Constitution, Public Administration, Political System, Governance.
  • Indian Economy: Planning, Rural Welfare-oriented programs, Economic Trends.
  • Indian National Movement: Nature, Reasons, Gandhian Era, Role of Tamil Nadu.
  • Aptitude and Mental Ability: Basic Quantitative Aptitude, Logical Reasoning, Data Interpretation, etc.

Aptitude & Mental Ability (25 questions)

  • Simplifications, Logical Reasoning, Puzzles, Number Series, Data Interpretation, Time and Work, Percentage, Profit and Loss, Ratios, Averages.

2. Main Written Exam:

The Main exam is descriptive and is designed to test the candidates’ understanding of the subjects.

  • Total Marks: 750 (250 marks per paper)
  • Number of Papers: 3
  • Duration: 3 hours per paper

Paper 1:

Modern Indian History and Indian Culture:

  • History of India since 1857, History of Tamil Nadu, and Culture, including historical places and monuments.

Social Issues in India and Tamil Nadu:

  • Caste and religion, women empowerment, health issues, poverty, and unemployment.

General Aptitude & Mental Ability:

  • Logical Reasoning, Decision Making, Problem Solving, Analytical Ability.

Paper 2:

Indian Polity and Emerging Political Trends across the World affecting India:

  • Structure and functions of government, Constitution of India, Union, State, and Local Governments, Challenges in India’s Polity, and International Relations.

Role and Impact of Science and Technology in the Development of India:

  • Science advancements, recent developments in technology, role of information technology, energy, space, and environmental issues.

Tamil Society:

  • Tamil culture, social structure, its heritage, language, and literature.

Paper 3:

Geography of India with special reference to Tamil Nadu:

  • Physical, Social, and Economic Geography, Resource Management, Disaster Management.

Biodiversity, Environmental Science, and Disaster Management:

  • Biodiversity, Ecosystem, Environmental Impact Assessment, Conservation, Sustainable Development, and Disaster Management.

Indian Economy:

  • Economic trends in India, planning, budgeting, public sector, and poverty alleviation programs.

3. Interview (Oral Test):

  • Total Marks: 100
  • The interview assesses the candidate’s personality, attitude, communication skills, and general awareness.

Final Selection:

  • The final selection will be based on the combined scores of the Main Exam (750 marks) and the Interview (100 marks), totaling 850 marks.
