Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission Group I Syllabus 

The TNPSC Group I exam is conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) to recruit candidates for high-level administrative positions in the state, such as Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Assistant Commissioner, and other similar roles. The exam consists of three stages:

  1. Preliminary Exam (Objective Type)
  2. Main Exam (Descriptive Type)
  3. Interview/Oral Test

1. Preliminary Exam:

The Preliminary exam serves as a screening test. The marks obtained in this stage are not counted towards the final selection.

  • Total Marks: 300
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Number of Questions: 200 (Objective Type)
  • Minimum Qualifying Marks: Generally, 90 marks for all categories.

2. Main Exam:

The Main exam is descriptive and designed to test the candidate’s understanding of various subjects, analytical ability, and written communication skills.

  • Total Papers: 3 Papers + Interview
  • Total Marks: 750 (Written Exam) + 100 (Interview)
  • Duration: 3 hours per paper

Paper I:

Modern History of India and Indian Culture:

    • Important events in Indian history from the 18th century onwards.
    • Indian culture, arts, architecture, and their impact on Indian society.

Social Issues in India and Tamil Nadu:

    • Social movements in India, social reforms, and their impact.
    • Role of women and women’s organizations, population issues, poverty, and urbanization.

General Aptitude and Mental Ability:

    • Numerical and logical reasoning.
    • Data interpretation, basic statistics, and quantitative aptitude.
Paper II:

Indian Polity and Emerging Political Trends Across the World Affecting India:

    • Indian Constitution, amendments, and significant Supreme Court judgments.
    • Governance and public policy, reforms in the political system, and the role of NGOs.

Role and Impact of Science and Technology in the Development of India:

    • Developments in space, nuclear, defense, and other technologies.
    • Information technology, biotechnology, robotics, nanotechnology.

Tamil Society – Its Culture and Heritage:

    • Evolution of Tamil society and its cultural aspects.
    • Social changes, the role of Tamil literature, and significant historical events.
Paper III:

Geography of India with Special Reference to Tamil Nadu:

    • Physical geography, climate, and vegetation of India and Tamil Nadu.
    • Water resources, agriculture, industry, and trade.

Environment, Bio-Diversity, and Disaster Management:

    • Environmental conservation, biodiversity, climate change, and ecological balance.
    • Natural disasters, mitigation strategies, and the role of disaster management agencies.

Indian Economy – Current Economic Trends and Impact of Global Economy on India:

    • Indian economic development, planning, and major economic reforms.
    • Globalization, liberalization, economic policies, and their impact on the Indian economy.

3. Interview/Oral Test:

  • Total Marks: 100
  • Focus Areas: The interview assesses the candidate’s overall personality, communication skills, leadership qualities, decision-making ability, and knowledge of current affairs.
