Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission Group II Syllabus 

The TNPSC Group II exam is conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission to recruit candidates for various administrative positions in the Tamil Nadu state government, such as Municipal Commissioner, Assistant Section Officer, Deputy Commercial Tax Officer, and more. The exam consists of three stages:

  1. Preliminary Exam (Objective Type)
  2. Main Exam (Descriptive Type)
  3. Interview/Oral Test

1. Preliminary Exam:

The Preliminary exam serves as a screening test. The marks obtained in this stage are not counted towards the final selection but are used to shortlist candidates for the Main Exam.

  • Total Marks: 300
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Number of Questions: 200 (Objective Type)
  • Minimum Qualifying Marks: Generally, 90 marks for all categories.

  3. General Tamil/General English (100 Questions)

Detailed Syllabus for Preliminary Exam:

General Studies (75 Questions):

This section assesses the candidate’s general awareness of various subjects including history, polity, science, and current events.

General Science:

  • Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, and their practical applications in everyday life.

Current Events:

  • National and international events, awards, sports, and important government schemes.

Geography:

  • Physical features of India and Tamil Nadu, climate, weather, natural resources, and industries.

History and Culture of India and Tamil Nadu:

  • Ancient, medieval, and modern history, major movements in Tamil Nadu, and cultural contributions.

Indian Polity:

  • Constitution of India, governance, Panchayati Raj, welfare schemes, and public policy.

Indian Economy:

  • Basic economic concepts, planning, rural development, poverty alleviation, and economic reforms.

Indian National Movement:

  • Major freedom movements, role of Tamil Nadu in the struggle, important leaders, and their contributions.

Aptitude and Mental Ability Test (25 Questions):

  • This section evaluates the candidate’s numerical and logical reasoning skills.

Topics Covered:

  • Simplification, percentages, ratio and proportion, time and work, time and distance, logical reasoning, puzzles, data interpretation, and statistics.

General Tamil/General English (100 Questions):

  • Candidates can choose between Tamil and English based on their proficiency.

Grammar and Literature:

  • Parts of speech, sentence formation, tenses, voices, figures of speech, comprehension, and literary works.

Vocabulary and Usage:

  • Synonyms, antonyms, idioms, and one-word substitutions.

Prose, Poetry, and Drama:

  • Important literary works, authors, characters, and themes.

2. Main Exam:

The Main Exam is descriptive and assesses the candidate’s knowledge, writing ability, and analytical skills. This stage is critical as its marks are counted towards the final selection.

  • Total Papers: 1 Paper
  • Total Marks: 300
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Minimum Qualifying Marks: 102 marks for all categories.

Main Exam Syllabus:

Paper:

General Studies (Descriptive Type):

The Main Exam paper is divided into three sections with a focus on essay writing, letter drafting, and comprehension.

Section A: Essay Writing (100 Marks)

  • Candidates are required to write essays on topics related to social issues, current events, or government policies.
  • Topics may include: Women Empowerment, Environmental Protection, Digital India, Poverty Eradication, etc.

Section B: Letter Writing (100 Marks)

  • Writing formal and informal letters, drafting official correspondence, and preparation of reports.
  • Topics may include: Complaints, Requests, Applications, or other official communication forms.

Section C: Comprehension (100 Marks)

  • Reading comprehension, summarizing, précis writing, and interpretation of given passages.
  • Focus on understanding the content, identifying main points, and presenting ideas concisely.

3. Interview/Oral Test:

  • Total Marks: 40
  • Focus Areas: Personality assessment, communication skills, problem-solving ability, knowledge of current events, and the candidate’s suitability for the role.
